Mark Ashley Fajardo and Ofelia Magno delivered strong opening wins for the Philippines in the boxing competitions of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games last Wednesday at the Chulalongkorn University Sports Centre.

Fajardo set the tone early, unloading crisp combinations to dominate the much taller Nguyen Duc Ngoc of Vietnam, 5-0, in the men’s 69kg round of 16.

“This is not my weight [class] because I am a replacement. My weight is 63 [kilos], [but] it is hard to cut weight, so this is where I fought,” said Fajardo, who still managed to dictate the pace despite the reach disadvantage.

“I really want to win a SEA Games medal. That is my inspiration and my family in Cebu because they are typhoon victims,” added the 20-year-old boxer, who continues to push for a breakthrough podium finish.

Magno also impressed, overcoming early nerves before taking full control to secure a 4-1 victory over Myanmar’s Aye Nyein Htoo in the women’s 48kg quarterfinals.

The win guarantees her at least a bronze medal and sets up a semifinal clash against Vietnam’s Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi, where a Finals berth will be at stake.
