Former National Basketball Association player Chase Budinger opened his Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Nuvali Challenge campaign on Thursday with his sights firmly set on qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Budinger debuted with new partner Trevor Crabb, opening their campaign with a 21-9, 21-13 win over Canada’s Luke de Greef and Tynann Gannett in Group B of the modified pool play at the Nuvali Sands Courts.

“I mean, for me, the goal is the 2028 Olympics,” said the 37-year-old Budinger, who competed in the 2024 Paris Games.
He said playing at home in Los Angeles would make the journey even more meaningful.
Budinger recently partnered with Crabb after previously facing him on tour, with both aiming to secure a spot in the LA Games.
He said the Nuvali Challenge serves as an important starting point for their new partnership as they build chemistry on the court.

“It’s a stepping stone. First tournament for us. Just to get to know each other and get the feel of playing with each other,” he said.
“It’s good. It’s high-level competition. With this heat, it’s going to play a mental factor in this tournament. We just need to dig deep and stay consistent.”
Budinger also expressed happiness in returning to the Philippines for the second time, saying he appreciates the warm reception and hospitality from fans.
“I love how the people are really nice, the accommodations are amazing so I love playing here,” he said.
