Victor Wembanyama wants to win the 2026 NBA MVP award and he isn’t afraid to talk about it. He made his case to the press late last month about his MVP candidacy, explaining why he should win the award and not reigning MVP and this season’s frontrunner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

With the MVP race heating up, here are three reasons why Wembanyama should win the Michael Jordan Trophy.

1. Wemby is putting up monster numbers for San Antonio this season

Wembanyama has been a beast for the Spurs this campaign, leading the team in scoring and rebounding. He is averaging 24.5 points and 11.4 boards through 60 games, helping San Antonio clinch its first playoff berth since 2016.

2. Wemby has made San Antonio a championship contender again

It has been 12 years since the Spurs last won an NBA championship, with legends Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili powering their title win over the Miami Heat in 2014. Wemby’s arrival has been an answered prayer for Spurs fans as the San Antonio’s championship window is now open once more after a long playoff drought.

Not only are the Spurs in the postseason again, they also have a legitimate shot of claiming the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, trailing the league-leading Oklahoma City Thunder by just 2.5 games. If the Spurs manage to claim the NBA’s best record, Wemby is going to be the MVP.

3. Wemby is the NBA’s best defensive player

The destination of this year’s MVP award might still be in question but the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honor is not. Wembanyama has been an imposing presence on the defensive end, leading the league in shot blocks with an incredible 3.1 per game average. His length has also disrupted opposing team’s passing lanes, with the Frenchman averaging 1.1 steals per game.

Will Wembanyama make history and become the NBA’s youngest-ever MVP? We’ll soon find out.
