Team Liquid PH is set to take legal action against former player Kiel “OHEB” Soriano after an alleged breach of contract, a move the organization said left it scrambling to rebuild its roster on the eve of MPL Philippines Season 17.
In a statement released last Thursday, the team emphasized that it had every intention of keeping Soriano as a central piece of its campaign, dismissing any notion that he was being replaced or moved elsewhere.
“Team Liquid PH fully intended to compete with Oheb this season. He was never being replaced or moved to a different country. He is an exceptional player, and we would have been proud to have him on the roster,” the organization said.
The situation, however, took a sudden turn on February 2, when Soriano informed management—reportedly for the first time—of his desire to step away from competitive play.
“There had been no earlier conversations about this,” the team noted, underscoring the abruptness of the decision.
According to Team Liquid PH, the lack of prior notice left little room for a structured transition.
The organization said it immediately offered to assist OHEB through what it described as a standard retirement process, one that typically spans an entire season to ensure stability for the player, the team, and the league.
“No warnings, no transition discussions,” the statement read.
“We offered to support him through the retirement process, the way we have with players before, and explained that a retirement transition usually takes one season so the player, the team, and the league can all be protected.”
The team added that it gave OHEB time to reconsider but was met with silence in the days that followed.
“In the days that followed, we reached out repeatedly. We did not get a response.”
OHEB has since moved to Honor of Kings.
