In the aftermath of the recent scuffle between the Detroit Pistons and the Charlotte Hornets, it's clear that the NBA still has its fiery moments. But compared to the league's past, today’s dust-ups are practically polite disagreements.

Here are the five most infamous brawls in NBA history, ranked by their sheer impact on the league.

Shaq vs. Barkley (1999)

Before they were the bickering, beloved brothers of Inside the NBA, Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley were titans on opposite sides of a heated Lakers-Rockets rivalry. The tension broke when Shaq fouled Barkley, who responded by firing the basketball straight at the Big Aristotle’s head. This ignited a wrestling match that saw both giants tumble onto the hardwood. Both players were ejected and slapped with heavy fines, but the story has a heartwarming ending. Their mothers famously called them up and told them to settle it over dinner, paving the way for the legendary broadcasting duo we see today.

Dr. J vs. Larry Legend (1984)

This clash featured two of the most iconic figures in basketball history, Julius Erving and Larry Bird, during the peak of the 76ers-Celtics rivalry. What started as Bird venting his frustration at a referee turned into a melee when Erving’s attempt to restrain Bird ended with his hand around Bird’s neck. Punches were thrown, benches cleared, and even the coaches got involved. The aftermath saw 18 people fined, with Erving and Bird receiving $7,500 penalties—a staggering amount for the league in the early 1980s.

The Point Guard War (1993)

The "run-and-gun" Phoenix Suns met the "physical and slow" New York Knicks in a game that felt more like a boxing match. The focal point was a bitter back-and-forth between point guards Kevin Johnson and Doc Rivers. The most chaotic moment came when Greg Anthony, who was sidelined in street clothes, sprinted onto the court to punch Johnson. The brawl was so disruptive and scary that it forced the NBA to fundamentally change its rules, drastically increasing penalties for any player who leaves the bench during an altercation.

The MSG Meltdown (2006)

In the closing minutes of a Denver Nuggets blowout win at Madison Square Garden, New York’s Mardy Collins committed a dangerous flagrant foul on J.R. Smith. The situation spiraled into a multi-player skirmish, highlighted by then-Nuggets superstar Carmelo Anthony landing a sucker-punch on Collins before retreating toward midcourt. David Stern, the league commissioner at the time, was famously furious, handing out suspensions to seven different players and fining both organizations half a million dollars each to send a message that the league would not tolerate such chaos.

The Malice at the Palace (2004)

This remains the most infamous night in the history of professional basketball. A late-game shove between Ron Artest and Ben Wallace seemed like a standard scuffle until a fan tossed a drink at Artest while he lay on the scorer’s table. In an unprecedented move, Artest charged into the stands to confront the fan, triggering a terrifying riot between players and spectators. The "longest two minutes in NBA history" resulted in 146 games worth of suspensions and $10 million in lost wages, forever changing how the league handles arena security and fan-player boundaries.
