Alex Eala bowed out of contention at the 2026 ASB Classic after falling to China’s Wang Xinyu, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, in the semifinals on Saturday at Center Court of the ASB Tennis Centre in New Zealand.
The 20-year-old Eala rallied from a 1-5 deficit in the opening set, reeling off six straight games to steal the frame and seize early momentum.
However, despite holding a 5-3 lead in the second set and having multiple chances to close out the match, Eala was unable to finish, as Wang strung together four straight games to force a decider before taking control of the third set.
Eala also took a medical timeout early in the deciding frame while trailing 0-3 due to an apparent back issue, a setback that hindered her comeback hopes.
The world No. 53 Eala had earlier booked her semifinal berth by dispatching Poland’s Magda Linette, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
Eala now turns her focus to the Australian Open, which begins next week. She and her American partner, Iva Jovic, also saw their doubles campaign come to an end on Friday following a 5-7, 3-6 loss to the Chinese duo of Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan.
