The Philippines has earned the privilege of hosting a qualifying event for the 2026 World Surf League (WSL) Longboard Tour.
Called the La Union International Pro, the tournament will showcase the world’s top longboarders which will take place from January 20 to 24 at Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan.
Four slots for the 2026 WSL Longboard Tour will be up for grabs as surfers battle it out in the Surfing Capital of the North.
"This new format is about creating more access and opportunities to longboarders from all WSL regions," said WSL Longboard Tour director Will Hayden-Smith.
"We know there are incredible longboarders in every corner of the world who deserve the chance to compete on the biggest stage."
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairperson Patrick Gregorio said the event will be a major boost to the country’s sports tourism campaign.
"It will be a real thrill to host an exciting new event. The event will bring together the world's best longboarders, men and women alike, to compete on the flawless waves of Monalisa Point in San Juan," said Gregorio.
The Philippines is expected to field a strong lineup of local contenders, led by Kaila Jane Dela Torre and joined by Nilbie Blancada, Ashlee Lopez, Daisy Valdez, Rogelio Esquivel Jr., John Mark Tokong, Roger Casogay, Penny Ventura, and Noah Arkfeld.
“Our Filipino surfing athletes will surely be preparing to show off world-class skill and homegrown heart on home waters. We are excited to deepen our partnership with WSL as the Philippines continues to grow its presence on the global surfing map," he added.
The competition will be open to all WSL LQS surfers worldwide, with a seeding formula based on the Challenger Series.
