Alex Eala continued her hot start to 2026 by stunning Croatia’s Donna Vekic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the women’s singles Round of 32 of the Auckland Open on Tuesday at the ASB Tennis Centre in New Zealand.

The 20-year-old Filipina tennis ace overcame a first-set loss to advance to the Round of 16 of this Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 250 event, with Eala winning the last two frames over the former world No. 14 Vekic, a silver medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, after faltering in the opener.

The world No. 53 Eala is also on a roll in women’s doubles, having clinched a quarterfinal berth in the ASB Classic alongside her American partner Iva Jovic.

The Eala–Jovic duo previously took down the pairing of seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams of the United States and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, 7-6, 6-1, on Monday.

These victories give Eala a significant boost as she gears up for the Australian Open, which begins on January 18.

Next up for Eala is a round of 16 clash against Petra Marcinko, who recorded a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (2) win over Camila Osorio. This will be the first meeting between Eala and Marcinko on the WTA Tour.
