Being in the same space as tennis legends Venus Williams and Elina Svitolina is already a hell of an experience for rising Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala.

But not everyone gets to tell the tale of standing tall against the very players she once looked up to as a kid.

Eala, alongside her American partner Iva Jović, outlasted the legendary duo in straight sets, 7–6 (7), 6–1, to book their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 ASB Classic women’s doubles on Monday at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland, New Zealand.

"I think we had a lot of fun. Just to start the year with a moment like this and sharing the court with two pioneers of the sport and pioneers off the court as well," Eala said.

"People I looked up to since I was young. I'm so happy to be able to share this moment with you and all of you guys."

The win sends Eala and Jović into the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament, which serves as a key warm-up event ahead of the Australian Open.

Venus Williams’ advice for Alex Eala

Williams and Eala had previously crossed paths at the 2025 US Open, where the American icon offered some advice to the youngster.

“Just enjoy yourself. When you’re having fun, things are easy. When you’re not, it’s not as much fun. You have to put the fun first.”

Eala went on to win her maiden Grand Slam match, defeating Clara Tauson in three sets at Flushing Meadows.

The rising star became the first Filipino player in the Open Era to win a singles main-draw match at a major.

Next up for Eala is a women’s singles clash against Donna Vekic on Tuesday.
