Graduating De La Salle University big man Michael Phillips openly revealed that he battled sexual sin and pornography addiction.
Speaking at a recent Christian gathering, Phillips shared his testimony about his personal struggles, faith, and his UAAP career.
“I struggled deeply with lust, sexual sin, and especially pornography,” Phillips said. “It covered me neck deep in shame, regret, and total darkness.”
“I would sin, feel horrible about myself, promise not to do it again, only to fall into it time and time again. It became a cycle that I could not escape.”
The 23-year-old said that, after struggling to seek help amid feelings of shame and guilt, he experienced a personal spiritual awakening that led to a renewal of his faith in Jesus Christ.
“I begged Jesus to save me from my pornography addiction and my lust addiction,” he said. “Through that powerful encounter with Jesus, I was reminded that I am no longer a slave to sin.”
La Salle's championship run
The Green Archers hoisted the UAAP Season 88 championship trophy after defeating the University of the Philippines, with Phillips earning Finals MVP honors.
However, the road to the title was far from smooth, marked by injuries, suspensions, illnesses, and moments of self-doubt, according to Phillips.
Despite these challenges, he said his faith helped him persevere, ultimately helping the Green Archers to their championship run.
“Not only was I doubting my basketball skills and talent this season, I was starting to doubt God’s plan for me and my life,” he said.
“The valleys during that season prepared us for the peak that Jesus was leading us to,” he said. “Jesus allowed us to go to rock bottom to show us that He is a rock at the bottom.”
Phillips said the UAAP title became possible through the guidance of God, saying "Jesus is the real champion". “This was a feat that was utterly impossible through our own strength. It was God who brought us out of that storm," he said.
“Jesus won the battle. Jesus is the real champion. He is the reason why I am victorious over my struggle with lust, and He is the reason why our team got the victory.
