The Utah Jazz upset the Detroit Pistons, 131-129, in a high-scoring NBA cross-conference thriller on Saturday morning (PH time) at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
Keyonte George led the charge with a game-high 31 points, while Lauri Markkanen exploded for 30 markers of his own. The duo’s offensive output proved just enough to hold off the Eastern Conference's top-seeded squad.
After keeping pace with the Pistons through the first half, the Jazz ignited in the third quarter, staging an offensive clinic to establish a game-high 15-point lead. However, Detroit showed its fine form, refusing to buckle and trimming the advantage back to single figures before the period ended.
The Pistons carried that momentum into the final frame, scoring four points in rapid succession to cut the deficit to 111-107. While Detroit threatened to complete the comeback multiple times, Utah remained poised, hitting timely buckets to retain the upper hand.
The drama peaked in the closing seconds when Cade Cunningham forced his way to the foul line, sinking two pressure-packed free throws to tie the game at 129. With the clock winding down, George took matters into his own hands, driving for a clutch running layup with 18 seconds remaining to regain the lead. Detroit had one final chance to steal the win, but Cunningham’s potential game-winning triple was offline as time expired.
With the victory, the Jazz improved to 11-19 and will look to build a winning streak when they host the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow. The Pistons, who dropped to 24-7, will look to regroup following the rare stumble against a Western Conference foe.
